High above the treeline, where the air thins to something barely worth breathing, a gravel shelf clings to the mountain beneath a pass called the Notched Blade. Four salvaged aircraft wait there in their revetments. Each dawn, a mechanic climbs a nose ladder, brush clenched between her teeth, to paint a single stripe that everyone agrees means nothing. Down the edge of the apron, old wing panels stand upright in the gravel like a line of patient sentries. Nobody explains them to newcomers. You’ll understand soon enough.

The orders are two sentences long: hold the corridor, expect no relief. Then something crosses the ridge that does not answer when hailed. It arrives in numbers too exact to be chance and flies in lines so rigid they look ruled onto the sky. Each one carries a single lamp, fixed dead ahead on whatever it has already chosen. It does not hesitate. It cannot be frightened. And every time it returns, it returns different.

This is a story of thin air and thinner odds. Off-key humming crackles across open channels, a dented tin passes from hand to hand, and small rituals are kept stubbornly against an enemy that cannot be reasoned with, bargained with, or stared down. Walk the corridor. Count what comes over the ridge.

Then count what comes home.
