It has been raining for a month, and the city has split itself neatly into three. There’s a district of creaking shelves and dog-eared paper, a stretch of blocks where engines idle behind red doors, and a quarter by the river where basement stairs lead down to a piano close enough to touch. Most people belong to one neighborhood. She belongs to all three, and she knows exactly how many crosswalks lie between them.

Her raincoat is too long. Her phone screen is cracked straight down the middle. On her wall hangs a calendar crowded with tiny doodled icons she swears are temporary, and in her pocket is a napkin covered in arrows, the first of many. A deadline she keeps not opening waits on her desk. In a corner café booth, her best friend has already ordered two coffees and is starting to ask the questions she’d rather not answer.

This is a comedy of side doors and near-misses, timed routes and invented errands, in a city where every lamppost seems to be watching. Lace up and follow the map, but stay light on your feet. The streets are about to string up lanterns, and lanterns have a way of lighting everything.

Every route she has drawn leads somewhere, and she’s running out of ways to avoid getting there.
